Geranium phaeum / Black Widow / Dusky Cranesbill / Hardy Perennial / Seeds

A versatile plant, doing well in sun to full shade, and damp to dry conditions.  Plants form clumps of leaves and strong spikes of dark purple flowers in May and June. They grow to a height of 60-80cm and are good for borders, dry gardens and wilder areas of your garden, where they are form good ground cover.  Plants grown from seed occasionally flower in white or lilac.

Geranium phaeum grows best in sun to part shade and moist well drained soil.   Plants self-seed moderately.

Pack of 20 seeds.  Sow in autumn to spring in colder conditions.  Germination is erratic, so sow more than you need.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy perennial (RHS Hardiness H7)
Flowers May and June
Height 60 - 80cm
Spread 20 - 50cm
Conditions  Full sun to shade and well drained soil
Sow

Sow in colder conditions, generally autumn to spring.  Sow 1mm deep in a tray of seed compost, keep at 5-10 degrees Celcius and germination takes 1-6 months, sometimes longer.  Germination is erratic, so sow more seeds than you need, and do not discard the seed tray too quickly.  Transplant seedlings when they are big enough to handle and plant outside after the last frost and after hardening off.

Grow Plants form clumps of semi-evergreen leaves and need little attention once established.  New growth can be attacked by slugs and snails, and plants can be affected by powdery mildew in dry conditions.  Trim back old flowerstalks and untidy leaves after flowering.  Mature clumps can be divided in spring and basal cuttings can be taken in spring and summer.  Plants self-seed in the right conditions.
