Nigella orientalis 'Transformer' / Yellow Fennel Flower / Seeds

An unusual and attractive form of Nigella with yellow flowers and elegant pointed seed pods.  Plants have a natural bushy habit, growing to about 50cm in height, and flowering starts in early summer.  These are great plants for early summer colour in a border.  This Nigella is an excellent and long lasting cut and dried flower.


Nigella likes full sun to part shade and light well drained soil. This particular form needs protection from hard frosts.


Pack of approx 300.  Best sown directly into the ground or containers in mid spring.  Seeds can be started earlier indoors in spring.  In warmer UK gardens, seeds can be sown directly into the garden or containers in autumn.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Conditions  Sun to part shade and light well drained soils, protected from harsh frosts
Sow Sow in spring or autumn.  Sow directly into cultivated soil in September/October (in warmer gardens) or in spring from March to April.  Cover lightly with soil and germination takes 1-2 weeks depending on the air temperature.  Sow seeds in small batches every two weeks if you wish to spread out the flowering season.  Or sow indoors in spring in modules of compost 3-4mm deep and keep at 15-20°C.  Transplant seedlings into the garden in late spring, being careful not to disturb the roots.  
Grow If the weather turns very cold, protect young plants outside with a cloche or fleece.  Deadhead to encourage flowers.  Leave some seedheads on the plants at the end of the season if you want the plants to self-seed or want to admire or use the attractive seedheads.  Remove plants in the autumn when they have finished flowering.
